More veggies

What can I say, it's that time of the year!!

I don't even need to show you what was going to happen to these squash.....cornmeal, oil, onions. Ummmm.

But this might need just a bit of discussion.  A fellow that was working on his airplane at the airport Friday brought by a box of "Candor Peaches".  After everyone took a few, I was left with a good size bagful.  This is all that remained by Sunday afternoon - and they were getting pretty soft.  I decided that some peach salsa might be a yummy treat!

Add some tomatoes and some hot peppers from Lindy's garden...onions, spices and some sugar.

Chopped up into tidbits.....

There you go!  Peach salsa!  It's quite good if I do say so myself!!!

Dress Failure

I left off in April, I think it was - with this dress all cut out and ready to sew....but the Bahamas, etc. got in the way.
I spent the better part of Saturday while it was 100 degrees sewing the little dress. It's been a LOOONG time since I've sewn any clothing, but it went surprisingly well. The zipper went in like a dream, the armhole and neckline facings lined up perfectly. Unfortunately, I just really don't like how it looks on me! It just really doesn't flatter my body-style at all! So - all you're gonna see is a photo of it on a hangar. I know it looks good on the hangar....it makes me look like a bright mushroom. I think this one may go to Goodwill!

I'm "babysitting" the puppies this weekend for Rich and Miranda.....kindof a trial run for the 10 days after their wedding! This is a kennel we've set up in the front yard.

Yum, it's corn harvesting time!

Dick and Lindy's corn is ready - and, as usual, they've planted too much....lucky me!
Cut off the cob and just barely blanched....the bags are cooling a bit before being tossed in the freezer! (the tub in the background I'm saving for lunch tomorrow!!)

Siler City Airport Open House 2012

Time for the Siler City Airport Open House again this year! After a foggy morning, the skies cleared up and we got our Open House in gear. There was a line of kids signed up for the Young Eagles free-airplane rides. Many chose to play in the cool airconditioned terminal building until the fog cleared.

Some pretty airplanes flew over!

The UNC "Tarheel 1"  medical helicopter volunteered to spend the day on display.  At about 11AM they got a call - so that departed to take care of that.  But, by 1pm they were back.  They were great- allowed the kids to climb in the helicopter and were very informative.

The US Forest Service brought one of their helicopters and a Cessna 182 they use for fire-spotting - they were also a big hit.

This is the second year we've done the Open House - and this year was even better than the last.  Lot's and lot's of townspeople came out.   The radio station broadcast live and did lots of "interviews" (with me too...ugh).

Our neighbor, Barney - who does the Thanksgiving brunswick stew every year - also runs Barney's Famous Hot Dogs.  He provided the refreshments for the event and was a big hit.  I, of course, ate a "slaw dawg"!

An outstanding achievement was made for one of the Young Eagles pilots- this is him signing the certificate for the young lady standing behind him - she was his 1000th Young Eagle! That's aLOT of Young Eagle flights!  It was a great day, but I'm glad it's over!  Hot and tired, I was....

Out with the old

I love my New Balance shoes (in WIDE size to fit my duck feet, thanks Daddy!)   When we fly to Myrtle Beach for our "100 Dollar Hamburgers", we often stop by the Rack Room so some such shoe outlet and pick up several pairs.  You just never know when they'll discontinue your favorite shoe!!  Well - it is now time to retire yet another pair of NB608's.  Still usable in the garden, of course!  Now I look like the geek in the brilliant white tennis shoes (which, I suppose, is an apt description!)  And since that was the last pair in my closet, it's time for another Myrtle Beach trip!

Oh, and Happy Friday the 13th too!! .

Shopping bag

I just wanted to give a "shout-out" to my sis about the shopping bag she gave me a couple of years ago. It always makes me smile when I use it!

Golden Knights

The Golden Knights stopped by Asheboro Airport the other day.

Inside the plane....

We were their stop-off point for a jump over the Petty's Victory Junction in Randleman just north of Asheboro. They often do a jump there for the injured/sick kid's that are attending the camp.

Early July required a trip! It was forecast to be 100+ every day, so we decided to pack up and fly west.  We didn't find much cooler weather, though!

First destination, Tunica, MS and Memphis.

I always love seeing the different terrain from the air.

Welcome to Mississippi. I love to type that word!

After some gambling, we drove up to Memphis. Neither of us had ever been - we toured the famous Beale Street.  Some "blues" bands were playing at various venues.  A little loud and "touristy" haha, we were tourists, after all!

Some friends had told us to be sure to go to the old Peabody Hotel.  It truly is a beautiful hotel.  For some reason, there are hundreds of ivory items on display.  I guess they don't know it's sort of "out of vogue" .....

The friends told us to be sure and see the ducks - which is apparently an odd tradition of escorting a group of ducks mid-day from their rooftop home to a pool in the center of the hotel.   We didn't time it well to see the ducks.  I'm actually ok with that.  Ducks inside - yuck!

Like I said, it's sortof touristy....OK visiting Memphis is off the bucket list.  (And a visit to Graceland was never on it, so no worries there!)

Our friends, Cecil and Carolyn invited us to spent July 4th at their mountain house near Cullowhee.
Unfortunately, the Jackson County Airport (closest to them) was closed for repairs.  Instead we flew into the very nice Macon County Airport, about 30 minutes away.

After much chatting and eating, it was time for their fireworks.  The developer of the "Bear Lake Preserve" (where their house is located) puts on a fireworks show every year.  We had front row seats sitting on their screened porch!

I was happy to see that my little camera did a good job photographing the fireworks.

The next morning, we went for a drive to downtown Sylva - beautiful little town, but most of the little shops were closed.  Beautiful courthouse in the middle of town.

Carolyn relaxing one morning!

A photo of their house on the hill!

We stopped at a rustic furniture shop - I couldn't resist posing in this outhouse!  (I think it's meant to be a garden shed, by the way!)

We delayed our departure one day due to some storms - this is the view from the deck - rainy and misty mountains in the distance!

A pleasant visit!  Back to 105 degrees in Raleigh!

Happy 50th to Duane!

Last night the poker gang had a little party for Duane to celebrate this milestone!
